The analysis demonstrated that the sand content measured by SHM can be assumed equal to that determined by LDM technique, while the clay fraction measured by LDM was lower than that measured by the SHM. A set of equations to transform LDM results to SHM results was proposed. The influence of the LDM measurements of clay on the estimated percentage of silt þ very fine sand particles (particle diameter ranging from 0.002 mm to 0.1 mm), which is useful for estimating soil erodibility, was also studied. a 2010 IAgrE. Comparison of laser grain size analysis with pipette and sieve analysis: a solution for the underestimation of the clay fraction
Classically, the grain size of soil and sediment samples is determined by the sieve method for the coarse fractions and by the pipette method, based on the ‘Stokes’ sedimentation rates, for the fine fractions. Results from the two methods are compared with results from laser diffraction size analysis, which is based on the forward scattering of monochromatic coherent light. From a point of view...
متن کاملAdequacy of laser diffraction for soil particle size analysis
Sedimentation has been a standard methodology for particle size analysis since the early 1900s. In recent years laser diffraction is beginning to replace sedimentation as the prefered technique in some industries, such as marine sediment analysis. However, for the particle size analysis of soils, which have a diverse range of both particle size and shape, laser diffraction still requires evalua...
متن کاملCharacterisation of reference standards by low-angle laser light scattering (laser diffraction) particle size analysis
Polydisperse glass microsphere standards were analysed by 25 international teams of particle metrology specialists using unambiguous methods such as microscopy, sedimentation, electroformed sieving and Coulter counting. The nominal size distributions were: 1-10, 3-30, 10-100 and 50-350 microns (m). The Laser Diffraction Proficiency Testing Scheme (LDPTS) then sent the samples to about 65 parti...
متن کاملThe Relationship Between Grain Hardness, Dough Mixing Parameters and Bread-Making Quality in Winter Wheat
The influence of grain hardness, determined by using molecular markers and physical methods (near-infrared (NIR) technique and particle size index-PSI) on dough characteristics, which in turn were determined with the use of a farinograph and reomixer, as well as bread-making properties were studied. The material covered 24 winter wheat genotypes differing in grain hardness. The field experiment...
متن کاملRock Fabric and Texture from Digital Core Analysis
Descriptions of rock fabric and texture are of great value to geologists and petrophysicists as they can be used in facies analysis and in the interpretation of the environment of deposition. Grain shape and size information is used to correlate to petrophysical properties. They are also of importance to the production technologist for completion design and sand strength/failure prediction. Tex...
